Woodblock Print

Description: "Mt. Lyell stands majestically 13,650 feet high clad in brilliant snow and towering over the peaks of the Sierra...The spotlessly clear blue sky that sweeps high over the mountains changes in a moment to a furious black color.. pealing thunder shrieks and roars .. man stands awestruck in the face of the great change of wondrous nature." 'Obata's Yosemite, page 4. An excellent impression of "Great Nature, Storm on Mount Lyall from Johnson Pass",number 8 in Obata's "America" section of his"World Landscape Series".The printing was done in Japan by the artist working with the Takamazawa Color-Print Studio. The whole project required over 32 carvers and 40 printers over a period of two and one-half years to finish and as many as 205 blocks for each image. The Japanese editions were apparently only stamped with the artist's seal for the Japanese audience, not signed with an English signature, the American editions were signed with sumi ink. This impression has the artist's seal and signature in the lower right corner, other impressions were stamped and signed in the lower left. The coloring of this image varies substantially.
