Ushiyamashita in Rain, 1923
Woodblock Print
12 x 9
in
Description: Beautiful Woodblock Print of a temple courtyard at a time when rain falls quietly and steadily, leaving fine reflections on the stone pavement; our eye is drawn into the image, as we follow two women, their umbrellas raised, towards the entrance where a figure in yellow rain gear quietly waits. Gently, steadily, life goes on, irrespective of the rain. This print was one of the first designs printed after the earthquake of 1923. The blocks were carved pre-earthquake but never printed. Amazingly, they survived the quake.
