Iris #47, 1984
Silkscreen
28.5 x 19
in
Description: In this magnificent print, an abundance of white and purple Iris reach upwards against the rich gold leaf background. Sensitive gradations of color, light and shade are miraculously created. Gold backgrounds were used abundantly in traditional, antique Japanese painting, wall decorations and screens that adorned palaces, wealthy homes and temples. Sugiura's work continues this tradition in his exquisite prints. Sugiura uses gold leaf on paper over which the colored silkscreen is then applied; since the gold leaf does not absorb the silkscreened color, a mottled effect is created on the gold background. This enlivens and creates a rich, atmospheric quality to his remarkable prints. Sugiura was born in 1938 in Kyoto.
