Akira Kurosaki Biography

Akira Kurosaki was born in 1937 in Dalian, Manchuria, on January 10, 1937. After the end of world war II his family returned to Japan. In 1962 Akira Kurosaki graduated with a B.A. from the Kyoto Institute of Technology. Later he received a post as Associate Professor at the same institution. In 1978 he worked as a guest lecturer at Washington University, Seattle, USA.

The artistic career of Akira Kurosaki began in the 1960s and 1970s. His style from that period was a kind of mixture of semi-abstract and surreal - typical for the post-war period. Akira Kurosaki exhibited widely in and outside Japan. His participations in the print biennales in Maastricht, Tokyo, Krakow, Lubljana, Paris and Norway made him known to an international audience.

Works by the artist are in renowned international museums like the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, Royal Gallery of Paintings, Netherlands.

After a long period of working and living outside of Japan as a lecturer, art teacher, juror and artist, Akira Kurosaki finally settled down in his hometown Kyoto and took a teaching post at the Printmaking Department of Kyoto Seika University College of Fine Arts.
