Toshihisa Fudezuka Biography

TOSHIHISA FUDEZUKA, Born 1957

Fudezuka graduated in 1981 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the Musashino Fine Arts University, Tokyo. Fudezuka then finished his Master of Fine Arts Degree in Printmaking at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, Tokyo in 1983.

In 1989, he won the Government of Canada Award, which granted him a Research Fellowship in Printmaking at University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada

In 2000, he was awarded a one year fellowship from the Japanese Government Agency of Culture to research contemporary printmaking in Poland.

Since 1984, Fudezuka has lectured at numerous Japanese Universities and several museums.

He has also held many one-man shows throughout Japan and in Canada.

To create the texture in the background of the triangle image prints, he printed two plates that have been carved with an overall random texture, each printed in separate colors, then turned 180 degrees and printed again in third and fourth colors.  This gives the subtle texture and color that you see in the background.  The triangle plate is printed upon this base, using three separate plates to layer the colors, with the lower level colors of the triangles affecting the subsequent two layers in an approach similar to glazing in oil painting.
